How To Create Scrapbooking Photo Borders


One of the great parts about scrapbooking is to be able to create stunning pages for the photos you are choosing to put in them. Sometimes, however, you may feel let down by the boring borders on the photos themselves. You can change this by learning Photoshop tools and how to Photoshop for your personal preferences. If you cannot find the exact frame that suits your purposes, you can always make use of Photo Shop downloads to find the perfect frame. There are several sites online that offer Photo Shop downloads and plug-ins for free. A simple Google search will lay them out for you. Sometimes, however, you need to create your own custom border because you want to match the lime green of the page perfectly with the border of your photo. By following these steps, you will be able to create custom photo borders for your scrapbook pages.


1) The first thing to do is, obviously, to select your photo. Have a look at it and decide what elements, if any, you want the border to highlight. Do you want a simple border that is merely thicker than normal? Do you want a frame that looks recessed? Do you want to steer clear of the traditional white border altogether?


2) From the floating toolbar, select the “Ink Dropper” tool.


3) You now want to select the whole image – if you do not do this, you will frame only a small part of your photo, if you manage to frame anything. Choose “Select” in the top toolbar and click on “Select All”. Your photo will now have a broken line around its outer edges.


4) Next you need to select “Edit” and look for the “Stroke” tag. A box will pop up and you will probably want to adjust the settings inside it. The first setting is the width of your border – this is displayed in pixels. The higher this number, the wider your border.


5) Click the “Color” box twice and the color palette will appear. You can choose a color anywhere along the rainbow. Alternatively, you can use the ink-dropper tool to select a color from within your photo. This is a great way to make a color in the photo pop out. Click on the “OK” button.


6) If you want a solid border, make sure that the opacity is set at 100%. If you want to have your picture showing through the border, set the opacity to less.


7) Click on “OK” and your border has been created.


Once you have practiced this a bit, play with creating different borders. For example, you can create a border that is 75 pixels wide and then overlay that with another color at 50 pixels width. You can, in the same way, create a succession of borders to create frames that rival Photo Shop downloads. At the end of the day, all that is really left to do is to practice and play with creating borders.

Supported Photoshop CS3 Platforms and File Formats You Need to Know


Adobe Photoshop has long been the standard for any kind of photo editing or image creation in the industry. It has set the bar for all similar programs to follow and has many different incarnations for different operating systems. The current most widely used version is CS3 and while CS4 is out more people prefer to use CS3 simply because they are more familiar with it. Photoshop CS3 and CS3 extended are designed to work with older, current, and future operating systems. While compatibility with Windows 2000 is not guaranteed both items are compatible with the almost decade old Windows XP. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are also both fully compatible with the program. Despite this however many still prefer to use XP and are distrustful of Vista and 7.


Photoshop CS3 Extended is an add-on to Photoshop but it also works as a standalone program. It allows you to work with film and even 3D models which gives the user a greater amount of flexibility in their work. It also gives those of us in the film and 3D modeling areas additional tools to work with. Ease of use and creativity have always been the focus points with Photoshop and this new add-on follows this philosophy.


It is unclear if Adobe Photoshop CS4 will offer this as an integrated feature or as an additional download but its success with CS3 users is apparent. Most love the added features and self styled artists enjoy being able to alter their models and images with ease. The results of this type of editing have lead to some truly beautiful 2D and 3D composite images. For those that don’t make 3D models or animations a little bit of explaining is required.


When making a 3D image most rendering programs allow you to make your model as complex as needed and then texture it. Texturing is essentially painting the model to give it all those nice shinny bits. Unfortunately not all programs render these textures as their artist’s desire. Before an artist would have to render an image then import it into a program such as Photoshop for editing. Now artists can import certain 3D file types and edit the textures of their models before doing a render. This allows for more realistic and satisfactory images to be made from models or animations.


Adobe Photoshop is available for both PC and MAC making it very versatile. You can run it on a netbook, laptop, or a desktop computer. Aside from making images for personal art Photoshop has found extensive use in all aspects of the industry. Everything from texturing in state of the art CG films to making concert advertisements for local band events has been done with the program. Photoshop is very easy to learn and even a beginner can create some good looking images. Add to the fact that the amount of layer editing options has increased with each release and you can pull of some impressive effects with just a few clicks of a button.


Remember that whether your operating system is the aged but reliable Windows XP, or the new and unproven Windows 7, Photoshop will work for you. It has various features that allow for immense editing and Photoshop Extended is both an add-on or standalone program. It is available for PC and Mac which means that no matter your preferred hardware you will always have it at your finger tips.

Learn Photoshop Now - Beginner Photoshop Tricks


Selecting Colors from an Image Quickly To turn any color into the foreground color Press I to activate the Eyedropper Tool and then click on any color in your image. To turn that color into the background color, press the ALT Key and click on any color in your image.


Change Brush Tip Sizes Quickly With a brush selected, simply Press the Right Bracket Key “]” to increase the size of your brush tip, or Press the Left Bracket Key “[” to decrease the size of your brush tip.


The Move Tool & the Arrow Keys Getting in the habit of activating the Move Tool through the keyboard is a timesaver; you can do this using the shortcut, “V”. Once you have the Move Tool activated you can use the keyboard arrow keys to push a layer or selection in 1 pixel increments. You can speed things up by pressing the Shift key along with the arrow key to nudge in 10 pixel increments.


Hide Your Palettes Press Tab once to hide all your palettes. Press Tab again to bring them back. Press Shift Tab to hide all your palettes except the toolbar.


Zooming In & Zooming Out You can zoom in on your image by pressing CTRL and the plus sign ” ” (Mac: Command and the ” ” sign). Conversely you can zoom out by pressing CTRL and the minus sign “-” (Mac: Command and the “-“sign).


Navigating In Magnified Images If you have lost your bearings when zooming in on a large image you can jump quickly to specific views using the following shortcuts: To set the view to the top left hand corner of your image press the Home Key. Press the End Key to set the view to the bottom right hand corner of your image. To move the view one full screen down press the Page Down Key. Press CTRL Page Down (Mac: Command Page Down) to move the screen view one full screen to the right. Press CTRL Page Up (Mac: Command Page Up) to move the screen view one full screen to the left.


Selecting Just The Pixels On A Layer An easy way to select an object that is on a transparent layer is to Press the Command Key (PC: Control key) and click on the layer with the object in the Layers Palette. This makes sure that only the opaque pixels (the pixels that are visible) will be selected with the marching ants, instead of the entire layer.


Tile Images for Better Visibility When you simultaneously open a bunch of files in Photoshop they automatically cascade, and it can be difficult to select individual windows within all the overlapping files. To eliminate this problem choose Window> Arrange> Tile and all of your open files will rearrange themselves to be visible all at once. When you’re ready to close the windows you don’t have to spend time closing them individually, instead use the Close All shortcut Control Option W (Mac: Command Alt W).


Getting Rid Of the Welcome Screen – And Bringing It Back When you first open Photoshop CS you will probably see a Welcome Screen that has links to Tutorials, Tips and Tricks, and a set of Color Management Help Files. At some point you might want to stop this screen from coming up. You should see a check box at the bottom of the screen that you can click to hide the screen at startup. Later on, if you change your mind and decide that you want to have it show up again, you can temporarily bring the screen back by clicking under the Help menu and choosing Welcome Screen.


Cycle Through All Of Your Open Documents Sometimes you’ll want to find one of your open documents that is hidden, but navigating using the Window menu won’t help because you can’t recall the name of the file. Instead press Control-Tab repeatedly (MAC and PC) to cycle through all of your open documents.

What You Need to Know About Popular Software - Photoshop Software


Adobe Photoshop, also known as Photoshop, is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is presently the primary market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. Many consider it to be the industry standard. This program is written in the C++ programming language. As you may well imagine, competitive software abounds and you should seriously examine your specific needs before committing to any product.


At the time of this writing the current version is Photoshop CS4. This product has several new features, in particular high-end capabilities for manipulating three-dimensional objects. Should you so wish, you can now wrap two-dimensional images around three-dimensional shapes.


Photoshop software dates back to 1987 when Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. Thomas’s brother John suggested extending the program to an image editing program. The brothers worked on it together. The first major version was released in 1990 for the Apple Macintosh. In 1992 the program was first released for Microsoft Windows. It was subsequently ported to Unix computers and now runs on Linux as well.


Photoshop is highly integrated with other Adobe software products that handle media editing, animation, and authoring. As may be expected, it’s quite easy to transfer files from one Adobe application to another.


Photoshop works with individual picture elements called pixels, while its sister product, Adobe Illustrator, uses vectors that are points, lines, and curves described by mathematical equations. Photoshop can utilize many color models including RGB (Red Green Blue) and grayscale. It can read and write popular image formats including .EPS, .PNG, .GIF, .JPEG, and Fireworks. It also has several native file formats including the .PSD (Photoshop Document) format that stores an image englobling advanced features and the .PSB (Large Document Format) format designed for files that exceed 2 gigabytes. Given Photoshop’s popularity, competitive products often support some .PSD features.


Adobe Photoshop CS3 is available in about twenty languages including Arabic (Middle Eastern version), two versions of Chinese, Hebrew (Middle Eastern version), Japanese, and Russian. The Middle Eastern version was specifically developed for Arabic and Hebrew languages which go from right to left. Users of this version can mix right-to-left and left-to-right text.


Adobe sells a consumer-oriented version of Photoshop called Adobe Photoshop Elements. This relatively low-cost software comes with a user-friendly interface and new tools such as the “red-eye” reduction brush that are pitched at amateurs. Be careful, depending on what you are doing you may require a professional version such as CS3 or CS4 or competitive products. One size does not fit all.




Why PSD to HTML Is Outdated


Ever since Photoshop was created, PSD to HTML has been a workflow that’s been the standard – and for good reason. It’s been a great way to create great websites and get them done in the most efficient was possible.


The workflow has always gone something like this:


  1. Design a website in Photoshop

  2. Slice up all of the images needed

  3. Write HTML code and bring in images

  4. Profit!

Once upon a time, The Web was a bit different – and PSD to HTML was the proper way to do things. Though, that being said – it’s not the best way anyway – but a lot of designers still get the job done this way. That’s okay… possibly..if they want to take forever to create a great design.


There’s a few reasons why PSD to HTML is Outdated for 2014, and I’ll get into those below.


  • Top of the line code – HTML5 and CSS3 have given designers a lot of amazing abilities that used to only be possible with Photoshop. This is a huge reason, we no longer have to design so much in Photoshop to make something happen on screen – such as drop shadows or fancy text.


  • Responsive – The Web is responsive now. Everyone has a PC, a laptop, a smartphone, and a tablet – or… a combination of those..or just one of them. either way, you get my drift – our websites no longer look the same on each screen, so it would just be silly to design PSD files for ALL screens.


  • op of the line apps – there’s so many web apps and software out there that allow us to whip up low fi and high fi wireframes in record time. There’s also frameworks out there such as Bootstrap and Foundation that allow us to code up a website for at least presentation purposes within hours.

So is Photoshop no good?


No, Photoshop is still awesome. It still has a place in Web Design – so don’t get me wrong there. I don’t think that it’s the best tool to use for mocking up websites anymore though. That whole workflow should be dead and gone by now – with all of the tools and resources available to whip up a design on the fly, there’s just no reason to use a bulky, outdated workflow like PSD to HTML to do the job anymore.

Knowing how to use Adobe Photoshop, is pretty much an essential skill for any aspiring professional graphic designer. This is because Photoshop is the market leading software package for creating, editing, and manipulating bitmaps and images. That said, Adobe Photoshop isn’t just for professional graphic designers – even if you dabble just a bit in graphics, perhaps manipulating the odd image, cleaning up your digital photographs, or creating banners or logos, you’ll find the software to be extremely useful.


On the other hand, while it’s true that many people will find Adobe Photoshop to be extremely useful, that doesn’t necessarily mean they can just jump into using the program. Photoshop is a very sophisticated program, with an incredibly wide range of features and tools, and that means that proper training and tutorials are necessary if you want to get the most from the software. Additionally, getting the most from Photoshop, isn’t just about knowing which buttons to press – you need to know the right procedures to use, and have some basic knowledge of prepress and design terminology – and these are things which are best learnt with the help of training materials.


The good news is that there’s absolutely no need to intimidated at the prospect of having to go through this learning process. As well as numerous books that can teach you how to use the program, there are many excellent Photoshop tutorial web sites and even quite a few software package that teach Photoshop. With the help of these types of resources, you might be amazed at how quickly you can master the program!

Using Paths, Shapes and Clipping Mask by the Pen Tool - Advanced


INTRODUCTION


Working with Shapes


Photoshop provides several tools that help add stylistic elements, such as shapes, to your work. You can add either a shape or a rasterized shape to an image. A shape is simply a vector object that keeps its crisp appearance when it is resized, edited, moved, reshaped, or copied. A rasterized shape is converted into a bitmapped object that cannot be moved or copied; the advantage is that it can occupy a small file size, if compressed. The disadvantage is that a bitmapped object is resolution dependent. You can add either kind of shape as a predesigned shape, such as an ellipse, circle, or rectangle, or you can create a unique shape using a pen tool.


Defining Clipping Masks and Paths


A clipping mask (also called a clipping group) creates an effect in which the lower layer acts as a mask for all other layers in the group. You can use a path to turn an area defined within an object into a separate individual object-like an individual layer. A path is defined as one or more straight or curved line segments connected by anchor points, small squares similar to fastening points. Paths can be either open or closed. An open path, such as a line, has two distinct endpoints, anchor points at each end of the open path. A closed path, such as a circle, is one continuous path without endpoints. A path component consists of one or more anchor points joined by line segments. You can use another type of path called a clipping path, to extract a Photoshop object from within a layer, place it in another program (such as QuarkXPress or Adobe Illustrator), and retain its transparent background.


Creating Paths


Using a path, you can manipulate images on a layer. Each path is stored on the Paths panel. You can create a path using the Pen tool or the Freeform Pen tool. Each pen tool lets you draw a path by placing anchor points along the edge of another image, or wherever you need them, to draw a specific shape. As you place anchor points, line segments automatically fall between them. The Freeform Pen tool acts just like a traditional pen or pencil. Just draw with it, and it automatically places both the anchor points and line segments wherever necessary to achieve the shape you want. With these tools, you can create freeform shapes or use existing edges within an image by tracing on top of it. After you create a path, you can use the Path Selection tool to select the entire path, or the Direct Selection tool to select and manipulate individual anchor points and segments to reshape the path. Unlike selections, multiple paths can be saved using the Paths panel. When first created, a path is called a work path. The work path is temporary, but becomes a permanent part of your image when you name it. Paths, like layers, can be named, viewed, deleted, and duplicated.


II. USE A CLIPPING GROUP AS A MASK


Understanding the Clipping Mask Effect


If you want to display type in one layer using an interesting image or pattern in another layer as the fill for the type, then look no further. You can create this effect using a clipping mask. With a clipping mask, you can isolate area and make images outside the area transparent. This works very well with type, and can be used with a variety of images. Figure below shows an example of this effect in which type acts as a mask for imagery. In this effect, the (rasterized) type layer becomes a mask for the imagery. The image of the roses is masked by the text. For this effect to work, the layer that is being masked (the imagery, in this case) must be positioned above the mask layer (in this case, the type layer) on the Layers panel.


Rasterizing Text and Shape Layers


To use type or a shape in a clipping mask, the type or shape layer must first be rasterized, or changed from vector graphics into a normal object layer. Rasterizing changes the vector graphic into a bitmapped object, one that is made up of a fixed number of colored pixels. Vector graphics are made up of lines and curves defined by mathematical objects called vectors. The advantage to using vector graphics for shapes is that they can be resized and moved without losing image quality.


Using Transform Commands


Before you create a clipping mask, you might want to use one of the transform commands on the Edit menu to reshape layer contents so the shapes conform to the imagery that will be displayed. Samples of the transform commands are shown in Figure below. When a transform command is selected, a bounding box is displayed around the object. The bounding box contains handles that you can drag to modify the selection. A reference point is located in the center of the bounding box. This is the point around which the transform command takes place.


Transform a type layer for use in a clipping mask


1. Open any image from the drive and folder where you store your Data Files, save the file as Postage, then reset the Essentials workspace. The postage type layer is active.


2. Click Layer on the Application bar, point to Rasterize, then click Type. The postage layer is no longer a type layer, as shown in Figure below left.


3. Click the Move tool on the Tools panel.


4. Click Edit on the Application bar, point to Transform, then click Skew.


5. Type -15 in the Set horizontal skew text box on the options bar, as shown in Figure below middle, so the type is slanted.


TIP You can also drag the handles surrounding the object until the skew effect looks just right.


6. Click the Commit transform (Return) button on the options bar.


7. Turn off the guides if they are displayed, then compare your image to Figure below right. TIP There are two methods you can use to turn off the display of guides: you can hide them (using the Show command on the View menu) or clear them (using the Clear Guides command on the View menu). Hiding the guides means you can display them at a later date, while clearing them means they will no longer exist in your document. Unless you know that you’ll never need the guides again, it’s a good idea to hide them.


Create a clipping mask


1. Drag the postage layer beneath the Stamps layer.


TIP Having multiple layers with the same or similar names is not a problem for Photoshop. To help out, try varying layer names or using upper and lowercase letters.


2. Click the Indicates layer visibility button on the Stamps layer on the Layers panel. The Stamps layer will serve as the fill for the clipping mask.


TIP It’s a good idea to first position the layer that will act as a mask above the layer containing the pattern so that you can adjust its size and shape. After the size and shape are the way you want them, reposition the mask layer beneath the pattern layer.


3. Display the Legacy workspace (created above).


4. Point to the horizontal line between the postage and Stamps layers, press and hold [Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac), then click using the Clipping mask pointer, as shown in Figure below left.


5. Release [Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac). The clipping mask is created. The stamps image becomes visible through the text.


6. Save your work, then compare your image to Figure below middle and the Layers panel to Figure below right.


7. Display the Essentials workspace.


III. USE PEN TOOLS TO CREATE AND MODIFY A PATH


Using Pen and Shape Tools


You have seen how you can use a clipping mask to create a mask effect. You can also create a path to serve as a mask by using any of the shape tools-the Pen tool, the Freeform Pen tool, or the Magnetic Pen


tool. You can modify a path using any of the following Pen and Path Selection tools: the Add Anchor Point tool, Delete Anchor Point tool, Convert Point tool, Direct Selection tool, and the Path Selection tool. Table 2 describes some of these tools and their functions. When you select a pen tool, you can choose to create a shape layer or a path by choosing the appropriate option on the options bar.


Creating a Path


Unlike temporary selections, paths you create are saved with the image they were created in and stored on the Paths panel. Although you can’t print paths unless they are filled or stroked, you can always display a path and make modifications to it. You can create a path based on an existing object, or you can create your own shape with a pen tool. To create a closed path, you must position the pointer on top of the first anchor point. A small circle appears next to the pointer, indicating that the path will be closed when the pointer is clicked. Figure below shows an image of a young woman and the Paths panel containing four paths. The active path (Starfish 1) displays the starfish in the lower-right corner. Like the Layers panel, each path thumbnail displays a representation of its path. You can click a thumbnail on the Paths panel to see a specific path. The way that you create a path depends on the tool you choose to work with. The Pen tool requires that you click using the pointer each time you want to add a smooth (curved) or corner anchor point, whereas the Freeform Pen tool only requires you to click once to begin creating the path, and places the anchor points for you as you drag the pointer.manipulate its individual anchor points without affecting the entire path. Moving an anchor point automatically forces the two line segments on either side of the anchor point to shrink or grow, depending on which direction you move the anchor point. You can also click individual line segments and move them to new locations. If you are working with a curved path, you can shorten or elongate the direction handles associated with each smooth point to adjust the amount of curve or length of the corresponding line segment. Other methods for modifying a path include adding anchor points, deleting anchor points, and converting corner anchor points into smooth anchor points, or vice versa. Adding anchor points splits an existing line segment into two, giving you more sides to your object. Deleting an anchor point does the reverse. Deleting anchor points is helpful when you have a bumpy path that is the result of too many anchors. Converting corner points into smooth points can give your drawing a softer appearance; converting smooth points into corner points can give your drawing a sharper appearance.


Create a path


1. Click the Indicates layer visibility button on the postage layer on the Layers panel so that it is no longer visible. Hiding layers makes it easier to work on a specific area of the image.


2. Click the Mailbox layer on the Layers panel.


3. Click the Freeform Pen tool on the Tools panel.


4. Click the Paths button on the options bar if it is not already selected.


5. Click the Geometry options list arrow on the options bar, then adjust the settings so that your entire options bar matches Figure below left.


6. Use the Magnetic Freeform Pen tool pointer to trace the vertical and horizontal posts that hold the mailbox.


TIP If you choose, you can zoom into the image to make it easier to trace the posts.


7. Click when you reach the starting point and the small solid white square appears in the pointer.


8. Click the Paths tab, double-click the Work Path layer on the Paths panel, then type Post path in the Name text box.


TIP If you enlarged the work area prior to create the path, make sure you restore the zoom level.


9. Click OK, then compare your path and Paths panel to Figure below right.


Modify a path


1. Zoom into the mailbox so the zoom factor is 200%, then click the Add Anchor Point tool on the Tools panel.


2. Click a point near the curve at the top of the mailbox, then drag a handle so the curve conforms to the left side of the mailbox, using Figure below left as a guide. As you drag the new anchor points, direction handles appear, indicating that you have added smooth points instead of corner points. You can drag any of these points so they conform to the shape you want for the path.


3. Zoom out to the 100% magnification, then click the Eyedropper tool on the Tools panel.


4. Click the mailbox to sample its color.


5. Click the Paths Panel options button on the Paths panel, click Fill Path, modify the settings in the Fill Path dialog box using Figure below middle as a guide, then click OK.


TIP The Mailbox layer on the Layers panel must be selected or the Fill Path option on the Paths panel will not be available.


6. Deselect the path by clicking a blank area of the Paths panel.


7. Save your work, then compare your image to Figure below right.


III. WORK WITH SHAPES


Using Shape Tools


You might find that the imagery you are working with is not enough, and you need to create your own shapes. There are six shape tools on the Tools panel for creating shapes: the Rectangle tool, the Rounded Rectangle tool, the Ellipse tool, the Polygon tool, the Line tool, and the Custom Shape tool. A shape can occupy its own layer, called a shape layer. When you select a shape or pen tool, three buttons appear on the options bar to let you specify whether you want your shape to be on a new or existing shape layer, be a new work path, or be rasterized and filled with a color. Shapes and paths contain vector data, meaning that they will not lose their crisp appearance if resized or reshaped. You can create a rasterized shape using the Fill pixels button, but you cannot resize or reshape the rasterized shape.


Creating Rasterized Shapes


You cannot create a rasterized shape on a vector-based layer, such as a type or shape layer. So, to create a rasterized shape, you must first select or create a non-vector-based layer, select the shape you desire, and then click the Fill pixels button on the options bar. You can change the blending mode to alter how the shape affects existing pixels in the image. You can change the opacity setting to make the shape more transparent or opaque. You can use the anti-aliasing option to blend the pixels on the shape’s edge with the surrounding pixels. If you want to make changes to the content of a shape’s blending mode, opacity, and anti-aliasing, you must make these changes before creating the rasterized shape; since the rasterization process converts the detail of the shape to an object layer. After you rasterize the shape, you can make changes to blending mode and opacity to the layer containing the shape.


Creating Shapes


A path and a shape are essentially the same, in that you edit them using the same tools. For example, you can modify a path and a shape using the Direct Selection tool. When selected, the anchor points are white or hollow, and can then be moved to alter the appearance of the shape or path. When you click a shape or path with the Path Selection tool, the anchor points become solid. In this case, the entire path is selected, and the individual components cannot be moved; the path or shape is moved as a single unit. A shape can be created on its own layer and can be filled with a color. Multiple shapes can also be added to a single layer, and you can specify how overlapping shapes interact. (Painting tools are used when individual pixels are edited, such as by changing a pixel’s color on a rasterized shape.)


Embellishing Shapes


You can apply other features such as the Drop Shadow and the Bevel and Emboss style, or filters, to shapes. Figure below left shows the Layers panel of an image containing two layer shapes. The top layer (Shape 2) has the Bevel and Emboss style applied to it. and clicking when the pointer turns to. Note: When the Puppet Warp command is selected, the options bar for the currently selected tool is replaced with the Puppet


Creating Custom Shapes


Although Photoshop comes with many interesting custom shapes, you still may not find the one you’re looking for. If that’s the case, consider creating your own using characters found within any symbol fonts installed on your computer, such as Warp options bar shown in Figure below right.Wingdings or Webdings. First create a type layer using the symbol font of your choosing, and then click Layer on the Application bar, point to Type, and click the Convert to Shape command. Use the Define Custom Shape command on the Edit menu to create your own custom shape. The Shape Name dialog box opens, allowing you to name and save the shape. Select the Custom Shape tool, click the Click to open the Custom Shape picker list arrow to see the shape you just created at the bottom of the panel.


Create a shape


1. Click the Rectangle tool on the Tools panel.


2. Click the Shape layers button on the options bar.


3. Make sure the Style picker list arrow displays the Default Style (None).


4. Display the rulers in pixels and display the guides.


5. Verify that the Mailbox layer is active.


6. Drag the Marquee pointer from approximately 0 X/520 Y to 555 X/700 Y using the guides to draw the rectangle. Compare your Paths panel to Figure below left.


7. Compare your image to Figure below right. The shape is added to the image, and the Rectangle tool is still active.


Create a custom shape


1. Click the Layers tab, then make the Button layer active and visible.


2. Click the Custom Shape tool button on the options bar.


3. Click the Click to open Custom Shape picker list arrow, then double-click Envelope 2.


4. Drag the Marquee pointer over the flat surface of the button from approximately 390 X/470 Y to 510 X/505 Y.


Modify a custom shape


1. Click the Set color for new layer button on the options bar, click the pure yellow swatch (first on the right in the fourth row) on the Swatches panel, then click OK to close the Pick a solid color dialog box. Compare your image to Figure below left.


2. Verify that the Shape 2 Vector mask thumbnail on the Layers panel is selected.


3. Click the Add a layer style button on the Layers panel.


4. Click the Drop Shadow, verify that Bevel and Emboss is selected, then click OK to accept the current settings.


5. Save your work, turn off the guides and rulers, then compare your image to Figure below middle.


IV. CONVERT PATHS AND SELECTION


Converting a Selection into a Path


You can convert a selection into a path so that you can take advantage of clipping paths and other path features by using a button on the Paths panel. First, create your selection using any technique you prefer, such as the Magic Wand tool, lasso tools, or marquee tools. After the marquee surrounds the selection, press and hold[Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac), and then click the Make work path from selection button on the Paths panel, as shown in Figure below.


Converting a Path into a Selection


You also can convert a path into a selection. You can do this by selecting a path on the Paths panel, and then clicking the Load path as a selection button on the Paths panel.


Choosing the Right Method


Are you totally confused about which method to use to make selections? You might have felt equally at sea after learning about all your paint tool choices. Well, as with painting, you need to experiment to find the method that works best for you. As you gain experience with Photoshop techniques, your comfort level- and personal confidence-will grow, and you’ll learn which methods are right for you.


Using the transform control to create shadows


You’ve already experienced using the Transform command to change the existing shape of an object or type. You can also use this command to simulate a shadow. To do so, you simply duplicate a layer containing the shape you want to have a shadow, and then fill the shape (that will be the shadow) with black using the Paint Bucket tool or the Fill command on the Edit menu. Make the black copy the active layer, and then use the Transform command to skew the object. Figure below shows an example of this technique.


Convert a selection into a path


1. Display the postage layer and the Stamps layer.


2. Click the postage layer on the Layers panel.


3. Click the Magic Wand tool on the Tools panel, and verify that the Contiguous check box is selected.


4. Click anywhere in the burgundy color behind the word postage.


5. If necessary, click the Add to selection button on the options bar, click the open areas in the letters p, o, a, g, and e, click Select on the Application bar, then click Inverse. Compare your image to Figure below left.


6. Click the Paths tab.


7. Press and hold [Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac), click the Make work path from selection button on the Paths panel, then release [Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac).


TIP Pressing [Alt] (Win) or [option] (Mac) causes the Make Work Path dialog box to open. You can use this to change the Tolerance setting. If you don’t press and hold this key, the current tolerance setting is used.


8. Type 1.0 in the Tolerance text box, then click OK.


9. Double-click Work Path on the Paths panel.


10. Type postage path in the Name text box of the Save Path dialog box, then click OK. Compare your Paths panel to Figure below right.


Stroke a path


1. Click the Eyedropper tool on the Tools panel.


2. Click the black swatch on the Swatches panel.


3. Activate the Shape 2 layer on the Layers panel, then create a new layer above it.


4. Click the postage path on the Paths panel, then click Brush tool on the Tools panel, and select the Hard Round brush tip with a size of 9 pixels with 100% opacity (if necessary).


TIP You can select a path as a selection (rather than as a path) by holding [Ctrl] (Win) or (Mac) while clicking the name of the path. When you do this, marching ants surround the path, which indicate that it’s a selection.


5. Click the Paths Panel options button on the Paths panel, click Stroke Path, verify that the Pencil tool is selected, then click the Stroke path with brush button on the Paths panel.


6. Click anywhere on the Paths panel to deselect the path, then compare your panel to Figure below left.


7. Click the Layers tab, then compare your Layers panel to Figure below middle.


8. Compare your image to Figure below right, then save your work.


9. Close the file and exit Photoshop




How to Use Tools Photoshop Elements Tutorial


Even a beginner can put Photoshop Elements to good use and come away with the intended effects. Prior to delving into the complete software, you should master the three most important tools it has to offer: smudge, blur and sharpen. When working on digital images, these three tools are perfect for editing images to achieve the desired affect. So let’s continue on with this Photoshop Elements tutorial…


In order to find the blur and sharpen tool, all you need to do is right-click the ‘smudge’ icon. The smudge tool is very effective for adding in various special effects to an image such as background and foreground compliments. In addition this tool gives you the option of doing the following (to digital images of your choice): you can edit images that are of focus and remove shadows you don’t want to see there. You can also blur both the foreground and the background by bringing the foreground into the background and vise versa. If you find that an image is too sharp or too blurred, the blur and sharpen tools can also be used to achieve the desired effect of either sharper image if too blurry or a more blurry image if too sharp.


If you wish to create darker tones in your digital images, you can do so by editing with the use of the burn tool. If your images have been over-exposed, the burn tool can also highlight details that may have been missed in the original image. The dodge tool is yet another option in this software and it too can be found by right-clicking (this time on the burn icon), however, it should be noted that this particular tool should be used if you want to make your images lighter by bringing out the details caused by shadows in over-exposed pictures.


If you once again right-click on the burn icon, you will find yet another editing function: the sponge tool. If you want to add more color and or brighten an image, the sponge tool can be used to apply saturation to your digital photograph. If you prefer less color and want an image to appear more dull, the sponge tool can also de-saturate the picture. If you want your pictures to look more unique you can apply special affects that will switch up both the foreground and them background. If you’re so inclined, you can even interchange the colors between the foreground and background. The reverse is also possible with this function: the background color can become the foreground color.


The Photoshop Elements software can also be used to alter the colors in your digital images. If you prefer the background in image to be red, you can do that with this software. By clicking on the icon you can also write on that same image in the same color you chose for the background. In other words, you can write on top of the image in red. By using this particular feature you can create some very interesting images.

Removing Cracks and Creases when Restoring Old Photos - 5 Minute Digital Fix


A common problem with old photos is that they often have un-desirable cracks and creases.


These can be removed quite easily using the Clone, Healing and Patch tools found in Adobe Photoshop.


The problem is that this can become a very time consuming activity if the photo in question is severely damaged.


This article describes a correction method using a free Action for Adobe Photoshop that can take less than five minutes to correct the majority of cracks and creases in an old photo


For several months now I have been using a Photoshop Action called de-crack, developed by Tim J. Edwards, with very effective results.


The original example image (Image 1) on our web-site page is typical of the sort of damaged photos we encounter on a daily basis.


As mentioned, correcting these flaws in Photoshop is actually not difficult but can take a lot of time.


Using Tim’s excellent de-crack Photoshop Action will not necessarily result in a perfect “de-cracked” photo.


Having said that, it certainly eliminates the more obvious cracks and creases resulting in you then needing to “tidy up” the outstanding cracks and creases manually with the Clone, Healing and Patch tools.


Now before we get started, you will need to get a hold of a copy of Tim’s de-crack Photoshop Action which you can download for free from the RetouchPRO web-site by searching for “de-crack” at the following link:-

You will have to download a very small .ZIP file which will contain the single Photoshop .ATN action file.


After you uncompress the de-crack.zip file you will need to save decrack.atn in Photoshop’s “Photoshop Actions” folder and then “load” the de-crack action into your current action list.


You’re now ready to give it a try …


Step – 1


Open up your damaged image in Photoshop


Step – 2


Run the De-crack Action with a high-pass value of 0.3.


Run the De-crack Action with a high-pass value of 0.3 again.


Run the De-crack Action with a high-pass value of 1.5.


Each steps takes only a few seconds and should result in three new layers which collectively mask out the majority of image damage.


Step – 3


The end result is the elimination of most of the cracking damage, which will then allow you time to spend on the remaining cracks and creases, which are usually quite easy to correct manually.


If you find that the de-crack action has in-advertently lost some of the detail of parts of the image, you can easily go to the offending “de-crack” layer in question and erase the de-crack effect selectively using the eraser tool, bringing back wanted detail.


And there you have it!!


Less than five minutes of digital image manipulation to remove cracks and creases from old photos.

Pictures of Money - Creating Stock Photos of Money With PhotoShop


I’ve photographed a ton of money over the last thirty years. I have photographed money coming out of faucets, being thrown in the air, squeezing through an hourglass, covering a planet, as jigsaw puzzles and serving as a flying carpet. I have PhotoShoped money trees and coins exploding out of piggy banks. I have made pictures of money being stretched, filling shopping carts and being raked into piles. I have pictures of money on trees, pictures of piles of money and pictures of stacks of money. I have pictures of money from around the world including, English pounds, Italian Lira, Japanese yen, German marks and, of course, Euros. Heck, I have even created an animated stock footage clip of “raining money”!


The first stock photo I ever created using Photoshop was a picture of money…flying through the sky on egret wings. As a matter of fact, seventeen years after I created that stock photo it was used on the cover of Time magazine! It took me two days and ton of work to create the flying dollars. I was using Photoshop 1.0 on a Mac II computer. Just rotating a 30megabyte file took 40 minutes! I could do that image now in an hour at most. Back then I had to have a color separator scan the files and that cost $80.00 per file.


I had photographed Snowy Egrets in the wetlands of Marin for brochure advertising a new housing development. I photographed a hundred dollar bill and had that, and a stormy sky, scanned as well. Back then I had no clue about clipping paths, if Photoshop even had clipping paths back then. There was only one level of undo and no layers at all. Selecting the dollar was done with the lasso tool and cleaning up the selection seemed to take forever.


A number of people told me that professional work could not be done with Photoshop, and even more told me I was getting into it too soon. But here we are 18 years later; the image is still selling, and, as I pointed out, even ended up on the cover of Time!


When it comes to money be sure and check what the legalities are in your country. Here in the U.S. the following regulations apply:


Authority: 18 UNITED STATES CODE; 504: Treasury Directive Number 15-56 FR 48539 (September 15,1993) 411.1 Color illustrations authorized.


(a) Notwithstanding any provision of chapter 25 of Title 18 of the U.S. Code, authority is hereby given for the printing, publishing or importation, or the making or importation of the necessary plates or items for such printing or publication, of color illustrations of U.S. currency provided that:


1. The illustration must be of a size less than three-fourths or more than one and one-half, in linear dimension, of each part of any matter so illustrated;


2. The illustration must be one sided; and


3. All negatives, plates, digitized storage medium, graphic files, magnetic medium, optical storage devices, and any other thing used in the making of the illustration that contain an image of the illustration or any part thereof shall be destroyed and or deleted or erased after their final use in accordance with this section.


Having said that, I never have paid attention to the rules…I have just shot what I wanted (hope I don’t write my next article from a cell). Maybe these are rules that the people who reproduce the images have to worry about more.


When shooting dollars it is a good idea to phone ahead to the bank to make sure that have enough clean new bills. More than once I have shown up at a major bank only to find that they didn’t have enough fresh bills for my photography needs. Now I always phone ahead. Banks have certain days on which there new bills are delivered.


It can take more money that one might think to capture great concept pictures of dollars. To shoot a shopping cart full of money I first filled the cart with crumpled paper, and then spread a thin layer of one-dollar bills over and around the “filling”. It took every one of my 2,500 one-dollar bills! Even then there will still some small gaps that I had to fill with Photoshop.


Some day I am sure all of my stock photos of money will either stop selling or fall to a trickle. That will be when the U.S. finally decides to come out with paper currency as colorful as the currencies of the rest of the world. Oh well.

How to Create a Vision Board in 4 Steps Using Photoshop


A vision board is also called goal board or goal map. It is simply a visual representation or collage of the things that you want to have, be, or do in your life. How to make it? It is easy. Get a poster or a piece of cardboard, cut out pictures from magazines or the internet and glue them on the board. You can draw and write the things that you want most in your life or the things that you want to become on the board.


Here I will show you how to create a goal board using Photoshop. You need to have Photoshop or other photo editing software and some basic photo editing skills. It is easy and fun!


Step 1: Create a new image file with the default size of 1024×768 pixels. Use it as a board to hold all the images.


Step 2: Search on the Internet to collect pictures and words that speak to your heart and inspire you the most. For example, you can use “Marineland images” as key word to search on Google to get hundreds of Marineland related pictures. Save one or two images you like the best as.jpg file in a folder. There are lots of great images on the Internet.


Step 3: Open the saved image file, select the image and drag it to the goal board. Each image attached to the vision board is a different layer on its own. Give each layer a meaningful name for the convenience of future editing. As you lay the images on the vision board, you may re-organize them based on the importance of different themes.


Step 4: Save the goal board as.psd type file first, so that you can always go back to edit different layers or add different visual effects to the goal board. You can also save your vision board as.jpg type or.gif type file to be used as desktop wallpaper or printed as a photo or poster.


The purpose of a goal board is to activate the law of attraction to begin to pull things from your external environment that will enable you to realize your dream. Of course, to have a vision board is just a start. You need to take concrete actions until your dreams are fulfilled. Enjoy and may all your dreams come true!




Layers - The Backbone of Photoshop


Adobe Photoshop is not cheap. There are certainly more affordable photo editing software applications available on the Internet but there are reasons why Photoshop is so popular among professional web designers, photographers, and graphic design specialists. The ability of Photoshop to allow you to work in layers makes otherwise complex designs easy.


If you are learning how to use Photoshop to do your graphic designs than make sure you pay special attention to the section on how to use layers. To illustrate how layers work imagine you have a piece of paper. This piece of paper is your background. You could leave the background white or paint it any color you wish. Now, let’s assume you want to add a photograph of a sunset. Your photograph of the sunset is on a transparent paper and you lay it over the top of your background.


The sunset image is on your first layer. Now, let’s assume you want to add some text. Your text is on another sheet of transparent paper and you lay it over the top. This is your second layer. You can add as many layers as you wish. You can also change the order of the layers. For example, if you decide you want the text layer to be behind the sunset layer you can move the layers easily with a few clicks of the mouse.


This is essentially the same way you create graphics and complex images in Photoshop. The beauty of layers is that if you decide for instance that you don’t want a sunset and you would rather have an image of a beach you can simply delete the sunset layer and add an a new layer for the beach image without disturbing the background or the text layer.


Working in Photoshop with layers allows you to experiment without fear of damaging your original image. Layers also allow the user to make changes without disrupting other elements of the image.

Edit Digital Photography - Using Photoshop to Restore Old Photos


Often times people have older photographs in albums or frames that become damaged by the sun or wear and tear. It is easy to restore these cherished photographs thanks to the technology available through the computer and photo editing software, including Adobe Photoshop.


An easy to learn program is Photoshop Elements. This program contains options that can help restore your old photographs. One of these elements is the Dust and Scratch Filter which can be used to remove the marks, scratches and blots on your old photos. The Dust and Scratch Filter can be found on the Menu Bar and then clicking on the Filter Tab. A drop down menu will list your choices at which point you can choose the Noise tab and click on the Dust and Scratches.


After selecting the Dust and Scratches menu, a pop up window will open with two control sliders. The first slider option is called the Radius and the other one is called the Threshold. You may also have another window open if the preview box is checked. Radius and threshold are the main options that are used in restoring the picture.


You can try to adjust the Radius slider which may remove the scratches. Please be aware that overdoing it may make the edges blurred as well. If blurring happens you can adjust the Threshold slider. This should allow the details to return and make the picture clearer with the scratches disappearing. You should be careful not to set the sliders too far or you will only create blotches on the picture.


To remove any marks on the photograph you will want to select only the part where the scratches are located, not the entire photograph. To select these areas you can use the Lasso tool.


Once you have fixed the areas you may want to use the feather tool to feather the edges of the selected area so that the fixed selection will not be obvious on the picture. To use the feather tool you click the Feather option and choose the Scratch and Dust Filter again. You might want to do the radius and threshold adjustment process again to get the correct texture and make sure all the scratches and marks are removed.


To finish the process and make the photograph appear professional I recommend you crop the image enough to remove any cracks or torn edges of the photograph. The canvas may be use to equally crop the image.


A person may add drama on the picture by adding a drop shadow on it. This will make the picture appear as if it has been lifted off the page. The color may also be removed using the controls Shift+Ctrl+U. He can then add color by putting a little amount of Sepia. He can do this with the Hue or Saturation tab. The contrast may be adjusted using the Levels option.


This is one easy way on how to remove the blotches and marks on an old picture. This is also a good way to make the picture look new but still appear classical. It will be a pleasant and easy way to display pictures kept on old albums and cabinets for a long time.

How to Check Image Quality


We’ve all seen examples of fantastic photography that looks great in a thumbnail or framed hanging on a wall. You may even have images of your own that compares favourably and attracts a lot of attention on-line. However, even well exposed and composed images can often fail to meet the strict criteria that makes the image suitable for commercial use. You may gain praise for the shot, but you may have a nagging feeling that it just won’t make the grade at stock photography sites. So, how do you tell if your image really does stand up to scrutiny?


Assuming your shot was professionally composed and executed, you will be able to confirm the technical quality of the image using specialist software such as Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). Your DSLR manufacturer may even supply you with in-house image processing software.


There are a number of checklist items that you should cover during post-processing. The image histogram, white balance, shadows / highlights, and spot removal are the usual issues that should be checked. However, you need to view your image at “actual pixels” (or 100% zoom) to really check on the quality of the image. Some may call this “pixel peeking” an out of date concept, buy you can rest assured that the stock photography agencies are scrutinizing your image to this level of detail.


Here’s what to check for:


• Image sharpness. A common cause for rejection of an image is soft image details when viewed at actual pixels. Don’t just use the sharpening slider in ACR. You want to be able to control what part of the image, and even which tonal range, gets sharpened and which does not. There are a number of great sharpening techniques out there, which are discussed on other articles. The only thing I would add here is not to rely solely on the basic sharpening tool in Photoshop.


• Chromatic Aberrations: those glowing, thin, soft blue or red hues that run along the edges of dark and light tones in your image. They may not show up when viewed normally, but you must correct any that appear when viewed at actual pixels. ACR offers a slider that can fix most of these issues, but be aware that some chromatic aberrations are so extensive that they cannot be removed.


• Compression Artifacts can ruin image quality. They basically look like smudged or noisy patches in the image. They are caused by the compression of the image to JPeg formats and are extremely difficult to fix. Make sure your image has none of these lest you will be rejected by the stock agency. Shooting in RAW format and saving to TFF will help reduce your images susceptibility to compression losses.


• Any corrections made to exposure and the tonal range can introduce noise to the image. Noise is common in point and shoot images, which use variations in ISO to control exposure. Removing noise can be very easy. Neat Image software generally works very well. However, be careful not to overcompensate with noise removal. It can make the image overly soft, and compensating with sharpening will introduce faults that are similar to compression losses.


• Checking for spot removal is essential. Hot pixels or dust on the sensor can damage the quality of an image and will almost certainly lead to rejection. The good news is that spots are very easy to fix using the spot healer or the clone stamp tool in Photoshop.


If you follow these guidelines, you should find that well composed and well exposed images will have few problems being accepted by stock photography sites.
