Class Reunion - Art Imitates Life

My invitation to a class reunion has become a perfect invitation to my media tools and software. With high definition and real time rendering coming of age with our blend of technologies, this will be a great opportunity to learn from school… again.

Something special happened this spring with the release of Adobe Creative Suite 5, the maturation of Windows 7, and the ever increasing technology and performance of our PC’s. The new high definition media is about as easy to create, manage, and edit as its predecessor. Here we’re talking about a file size that has increased from 10 to 100 fold. High definition file captures are much larger, wider and previously would bring your PC editing capability to a standstill.

Windows 7 recognizes hi def video such as.mts file types and AVCHD video format. This is new and simply seeing a thumbnail image of your video at the file level saves enormous amount of time. The review process, scanning multiple files quickly by date, category, and now with a thumbnail image is so much easier. Windows 7 media player also recognizes this file type so when you want to preview the movie before bringing it into an editor, this is quite easy too. This shouldn’t seem like a big deal but these files can be gigabytes in size, one hundred or one thousand times the size of a typical standard definition (SD) video of camcorder fame.

The next part of this ‘something special’ is Adobe CS5 and its leading media applications being 64 bit. Adobe CS5   Premiere   Pro , After Effects, Photoshop, and Media Encoder are now all 64 bit applications which means the amount of memory they can address has increased four thousand times! There are many, easy to find references to PC memory and the now popular 64 bit systems but I’ve included a simple link at the end of this article provided by Microsoft with table highlighting the difference in 32 and 64 bit memory for different memory uses.

In practical everyday terms, memory is nearly the speed of light, the speed of electricity where your disk access is the speed of your spinning disk. In even more practical everyday terms, try it out! You will see that large hi def files that slowed your PC or required a pause, wait, catch up in your editor, now respond instantaneously.

The merging of media is ongoing. Where Internet, ‘Web’ access was originally limited by phone type modems, followed by improved cable and satellite delivery, broadband with its tremendous increase in capacity and performance now define our Web experience too.
