The only thing is that opacity is designed to make the layer styles transparent, whereas the Fill effect still keeps the layer styles visible. This way you can get rid of the green but you will have everything that can help you to make your buttons.

So you just have to press Ctrl and then click on the circle layer so as to select the particular circle, then invert the selection by simply pressing Shift+Ctrl+I. this way you will be done.
