Adobe Photoshop & Other Image Editors

Adobe  Photoshop

Ease-of-use is not the first feature that  Photoshop  is noted for, but that is what experienced users most appreciate. The reason is that it is easy to customize Adobe  Photoshop  so that working with its numerous features can be highly streamlined and efficient. Besides this, there is Adobe  Photoshop’s  power and versatility. This power has been greatly extended by the numerous software plug-ins that allow you to extend its every feature – from specialized saving of JPEG files and the removal of dust-specks to an infinity of filter effects. However, in addition to its relatively high purchase price, Adobe  Photoshop  also requires large amounts of RAM for it to function efficiently and fully. If you handle files not larger than 5MB, then 64MB of RAM will be adequate; however, most digital photographers work with file sizes of 10-20MB, in which case 256MB or more RAM should be installed. Don’t forget that more RAM will be needed if you wish to run a desktop publishing or Web-page design program at the same time.

Other Image Editors

More professional and costly software provides powerful features with slightly different slants.

Corel Painter (Mac and PC), for example, produces a multitude of paint-like effects together with image-editing tools, some far more powerful than those available in Adobe  Photoshop . Corel Photo-Paint is a serious competitor for  Photoshop  and at a cheaper price. Equilibrium DeBabelizer is designed for image processing in batches and its tools for making global changes to many images are extremely powerful.
