Unless you’re a hardwood floor professional, you may not even know what to look for when it comes to keeping an eye on the health of your hardwood floors. As surfaces that get used on a regular basis and are exposed to elements such as moisture and heat, your floors will deteriorate over time. Moisture or water damage can cause specific areas to develop ridges that detract from the look and health of the floor surface. Furniture can cause scratches, scuffs, and even indentations. Regular foot traffic can wear down shine and surface protection in high-use areas.
If you notice any of these signs of deterioration, it may be time to refinish your floors. However, it’s best to get a professional opinion on the health of your floors before you go in for refinishing. A pro will be able to point out spots of damage that actually need to be repaired before you refinish. If sections of your floors are deeply stained, warped, squeaky, or damaged in some other way, you need to make sure that those issues are fixed before any refinishing starts. Otherwise, you’ll just refinish and seal in the damage, which will make it more difficult to deal with in the long run.
If there’s no major damage apparent, the next thing to do is to make sure that your floors are thick enough to be refinished. As a general guideline, a wood floor needs to be at least 1/8 of an inch thick to be refinished. This is because the sanding part of the refinishing process will actually remove part of the floor. There needs to be enough wood present so that there’s something left to refinish in the end. Some newer engineered wood floors have wear layers as thin as 0.6 mm and so cannot be refinished. Some older floors that have been refinished before may be too thin to go through another hardwood floor refinishing process. Your hardwood flooring pro will be able to determine the viability of refinishing your particular floor, so you should consult them before taking any action.
If you see that your hardwood flooring could use a little pick-me-up, consult with a hardwood refinishing pro to make sure that there’s no damage that needs to be addressed prior to refinishing, and that the floors are thick enough to go through a refinishing process. If everything’s good to go, then you can contract your flooring pro to bring your floors back to their original shine, glow, and warmth.
Alongside the basics of animation that are easy to implement in After Effects, ‘assistants’ are provided to help you with the next stage of your animation development. This is a great time to learn about and begin implementing layers too.
Layers are just what they sound like and if you use other graphic products such as Photoshop or Fireworks, you will be familiar with the layer concept. Layers allow you to place different objects on your stage, on their own ‘layer’.
This gives you the freedom to treat them differently, to give these different ‘actors’ their own personality. We think of backdrops and mattes that provide a background color or setting for your stage.The action of your animation may very well involve different players.
Even a simple logo unfolding on the stage might play with a waterfall or sunrise, a motorcycle zooming into center stage or an instructor walking into your tutorial to address the audience. All of these ‘players’ will be placed on their own layer and each layer has it’s own definition including what may be the most fundamental, and that is where it appears on the timeline, where this object enters into your animation.
Because we are blending layers and assistants in this tutorial let’s return to assistants for a moment. We learned about the Motion Sketch assistant in our last article, how to record the movement and animation of your object by simply tracing the path as you would on a piece of paper. This method is very easy to use, very easy to visualize but it lacks a bit of finesse. This is where two assistants appear: the ‘smoother’ and ‘auto-orient’.
The ‘smoother’, much like it’s name implies, smooths out the velocity and distance of the keyframes you created by tracing with motion sketch. In the same way it is practically impossible to hold your camera perfectly still when you take a photograph, it is nearly impossible to trace a motion path without a bit of ‘gittery’ hand motion. Once you have drawn and reviewed your motion sketch, choose the smoother, under Window>Smoother. Select all your position keyframes by simply selecting the position property under your animated objects and click ‘apply’ under the smoother options. That’s it. You will see the number of keyframes reduced, and your path will be ‘smoothed out’. If you increase the tolerance setting on the smoother, it will further reduce the number of keyframes. Like most After Effects settings, the best way to determine what works best for you and this particular animation is to try some different settings. Play with it a little bit then execute your movie and observe how this assistant has refined your animation.
Another assistant that belongs to this lesson is the ‘auto-orient’ rotation assistant. This too is a pretty intuitive tool. Imagine a bird or a plane flying, an automobile cruising along a curvy country road. Animating the motion only would appear comical if your automobile wasn’t always oriented along the path ahead. Auto-orient (choose under Layer>Transform>Auto-Orient) offers an ‘Orient Along Path’ option which will keep your object aligned to it’s forward motion. Your car will appear to be oriented along the path it follows, as will your bird or plane.
These simple assistants help your refine your animation, save you time, and help create control that would be very difficult to create manually by setting each keyframe yourself. Experiment with the animation assistants and you will appreciate their ease of use and simple contributions.

First of all tools is the first and foremost thing we all use, likewise in Photoshop too, it is important to learn the functions of all the basic tools. Tools is accessible from the left side bar. Each tool correspond to a certain function. Next is to learn about the layers and the functions available for layers. for example, there is blending options which can be applied, adjustment filters or the mask functions. Experiment with these functions and learn their operations.
Next learn to use the functions present in the filters menu. They provide extra effects to your image. Each filter has many sub effects which can be applied to the images. Mastering these tools take time, but it is effective in the long run. The Extended versions have 3D function, that enable the user to create 3D effects inside of Photoshop itself.
The functionality of Photoshop can be extended by using add-on programs called as plug-ins. Plugin-ins are used to modify the image based on the function of the plugin. Some plugins are created by Adobe itself, and others are 3rd party plugins. Some of the popular Plugins are Alien Skin, Andromeda, Strata, Adobe Camera Raw etc. Simple GIF animations can be done in Photoshop. Previously it was as ImageReady, but over the years it was integrated into Photoshop itself. Another important and very useful feature is the History. It keeps track of all the functions performed, so if you create a stunning effect and want to repeat it again, then this tool comes in handy.
Inorder to import other images there is another software called Adobe Photoshop Elements. It check the Hard Drives for images and indexes them, so that file browsing becomes easy and can be imported directly into Photoshop. Photoshop also comes with a feature called as Adobe Bridge, Which performs almost similar to Elements.
Well, i just walked you through the basic functions and operations of Photoshop. But what is important is that you practice. Keep trying new techniques and effects. Come up with your own methods of doing things, which help you understand and learn it easily. And one more important note Creativity is the key here. Good luck!
One of the most important resources a freelance digital photographer can have is a digital editing program like Photoshop. If you are selling your photos online, it definitely helps to edit your photos to a professional quality. If it’s just altering your color scheme, fixing lighting or adding filters, it can all be done by using a program such as Photoshop. A big problem that I get in my inbox from freelance digital photographers is how expensive Adobe Photoshop is for the newest version. If you don’t know, Adobe Photoshop is around $500.00, and although it is a great professional tool, it can be a little absurd and superfluous to have so many tools that aren’t going to be used. You may just want a digital editing program to fix slight changes and aren’t really going to be using the tools for graphic design. You need to find an alternative program that won’t send your wallet to the cleaners.
Your options may be slightly limited, as far as quality and robust digital editing software goes. But there are tons of different options that cut the cost way down. An option that has been getting more popular but can be considered a little bit too gimmicky and not professional enough is online based editing (web based editing). This offers you some basic editing options and a few clever online ideas but falls way short of an Adobe product. What an online based editing program lets you do is; edit everything from the internet without downloading a program. Check out the link at the bottom to see a complete list of sites where you can try out these programs. They are usually free and are very easy to use, but as I said before, they are limited.
If you don’t mind spending some money, then you can get a more basic version of Photoshop called Elements. It’s also by Adobe, and offers you the most comprehensive tools that you can get for the money. This would be your best second option if you are a freelance digital photographer because, it is great for beginners and veterans trying to sell their photos online. Obviously the main downside is that you are still going to be spending a little bit of money. The program cost around $90.00. Still, if you think you want to sell your digital photos to buyers online and you’re in for the long haul, you probably can invest under $100.00 for picture perfectness. Lastly, the only option you have left is to get a find a program online that you can download for free and use whenever you want. These programs are great for beginners, they don’t offer as little as the web based programs and don’t offer as much as Elements or Photoshop would, but still get the job done. The main attraction these programs have is their cost, they are usually free. The downside once again is, they lack a lot of the more professional tools and they don’t have the greatest user friendly interfaces. Some of these programs are a little bit buggy, meaning, they might not work with your hardware, or have they’ll have problems saving files and such. Also, you need to check if they can run on a Mac, if you do indeed own a Mac. You can find a list of the program descriptions and links at the bottom of this page.
There are your Photoshop alternatives, you might need to do some research to find which one best suites you, but I don’t recommend going without any digital editing software.
